Multiplayer Player Group - Creating UI for a racing game
Jameson Tyler - Creating UI for a car Game
Introduction: Briefing
Introduction: Briefing
I was asked by the multiplayer Player Group to create iterations of a UI design following a mood board for a car racing game. I decided to base the overall theme on Ancient Greece and its mythology because I
realised that most racing games especially rally-based ones choose real life locations which
means they are always the same. So Ancient Greece would spice up the genre I believe leaning
into the mythology aspect for inspiration. Additionally, The references used for these concepts
were from the client's mood board and Rocket League using the UI game database which is an
online archive of UI used within multiple games ranging from indie to AAA games. Furthermore, I
did two iterations of potential scenes going for different moods and approaches to layout to try
and break out of getting too comfortable with one design and viewing things from a new
perspective.

UI Design : Personal mood board
Design 1: Trials of Olympus
I really wanted to base this around the Vaporwave style as I thought it matched the pre-existent Mood board with a lot of purple hues and strong geometrical shapes. Vaporwave's retro-futuristic aesthetic, characterized by its vibrant color palette and nostalgic 80s elements, perfectly complements the themes I wanted to explore. Furthermore, throughout Greek mythology, there are strong geometric shapes, such as Zeus' lightning bolts and the use of triangles in temple roofing and construction. I aimed to carry this across into the design, integrating these classical motifs with a modern twist. What I really loved about this UI design is the use of top and bottom borders to create a cohesive composition. These borders not only frame the central elements effectively but also guide the viewer's eye directly to the car, ensuring that it remains the focal point of the design. The combination of Vaporwave aesthetics with mythological elements results in a unique and visually appealing interface that captures the essence of both styles.
Design 1: Medusas Serpent Rally
I really wanted to base this UI design around Medusa's Cave to explore new themes and approaches. The preexistent Mood board inspired me with its emphasis on mythological elements and strong visual motifs. Medusa's mythological background provided a rich source of inspiration, with its combination of danger, mystery, and ancient lore. What I particularly enjoy about this design is the openness of the layout. The UI elements are positioned in a way that creates a nice, uncluttered area that naturally focuses on the car. The top and bottom borders frame the central elements effectively, guiding the viewer's eye directly to the car, which is the main focal point of the design. The dark, ominous atmosphere of the cave setting, along with the presence of Medusa and the eerie red eyes in the background, adds a sense of foreboding and danger. This enhances the immersive experience while maintaining a clear visual hierarchy. The use of dark tones and sharp, angular shapes contributes to the overall feeling of tension and excitement, while also keeping the interface clean and visually appealing. In summary, this design represents a fusion of modern aesthetics and classical mythology. The open layout and strategic positioning of UI elements result in a unique and captivating interface that enhances the overall gaming experience by keeping the focus on the car and the action.
